Method and sources: Sweden
Every rate and amount comes from an official source.
How we calculate
- We calculate the withholding that the Swedish Tax Agency’s tax tables give: the monthly pay is read in its income bracket and the tax is calculated on the top of the bracket times twelve, following the technical description SKV 433.
- Tax is municipal income tax (municipality and region) plus state income tax on income above the bracket limit, reduced by the basic allowance and the tax credits, and increased by the general pension fee, the public service fee and the funeral and church fee.
- The table is chosen by the total rate (municipal tax, regional tax, funeral fee and, for members, the church fee) rounded to a whole number: 32.50 gives table 32 and 32.51 gives table 33.
- Above 80,000 SEK a month the table gives the deduction as a whole percentage, so net pay can dip slightly when the salary crosses a bracket.
- Net to gross uses the engine itself: a binary search finds the smallest gross that gives the net pay requested.
